TikTok removes over 360,000 videos in Kenya for violating guidelines

TikTok has disclosed that over 360,000 videos were removed from its platform in Kenya during the second quarter of 2024 for violating its Community Guidelines.

This accounts for approximately 0.3 percent of all videos uploaded in the country during the period.

The company’s latest report emphasizes the effectiveness of TikTok’s proactive content moderation system, with 99.1 percent of the flagged videos being removed before any user reports were submitted.

Furthermore, 95 percent of these videos were deleted within 24 hours of being flagged, showcasing the platform’s commitment to prompt action on violations.

The report also highlighted that 60,465 accounts were banned in Kenya for breaching the Community Guidelines, with a large proportion (57,262 accounts) being linked to users suspected to be under the age of 13.

This move aligns with TikTok’s global initiative to protect young users and ensure compliance with age-related regulations.

Globally, TikTok reported a sharp rise in content removals in June 2024, with more than 178 million videos being taken down worldwide.

Of these, 144 million were flagged and removed automatically using advanced AI technology.

TikTok stressed that artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in accelerating content moderation, while also reducing human moderators’ exposure to harmful material.
