Kevin Kang'ethe, the individual sought by the US authorities for the alleged murder of Maggie Mbitu, has been placed under detention at Muthaiga police station for 30 days pending extradition proceedings.

Milimani Magistrate Zainab Abdul granted the state's application, allowing further investigation into the case.

Kevin Kangethe is accused of murdering 31-year-old Mbitu on October 31 of the previous year, allegedly stabbing her multiple times in the face and neck.

He then left her in a locked car in a parking garage at Boston Logan International Airport before fleeing the United States.

According to court documents, the two were residents of Massachusetts and were in a relationship.

Mbitu, a home health care aide in Halifax, Massachusetts, went missing on October 30 after leaving her workplace.

Police officer Patrick Wachira, based at the DCI, explained in an affidavit that two days after Mbitu's murder, Chelsea district court received an application for a criminal complaint charging Kang'ethe with first-degree murder.

Subsequently, a warrant of arrest was issued for his extradition to the United States.

Kang'ethe was arrested on January 30 in Parklands, Nairobi, and booked at Gigiri police station in connection with the ongoing murder investigation.

The DCI officer noted that they needed more time to conduct the probe, and the extradition process had not been completed adequately.

The court approved their application, and the matter is scheduled for mention on March 4 to confirm compliance.
