A 30-year-old mother of two has reported her husband for assault and harassment after the couple disagreed on how to spend Sh300 — money she had hoped to use to buy food for their children.

Scholastica Jeptoo told police that her husband, Abel Keter, the father of her two children attacked and injured her after they argued over whether to spend the money on food or alcohol.

Jeptoo said she had pleaded with her husband to allow her to use the entire amount to buy dinner for their children. However, Keter insisted on using the money to buy alcohol.

Eventually, the couple agreed to split the money equally. Keter proposed that Jeptoo accompany him to a nearby bar where she could buy him a drink worth Sh150 and then use the remaining amount to purchase food.

Things took an ugly turn at the bar when Keter reportedly changed his mind and demanded the entire Sh300. Jeptoo begged the waitress to divide the money, explaining that their two children were waiting at home without food.

Enraged, Keter allegedly slapped and punched Jeptoo in the face, injuring her eyes. It took the intervention of other patrons to stop the attack. He later apologised and promised not to repeat his actions.

The couple returned home, but once inside, Keter allegedly assaulted Jeptoo again. In a bid to protect herself from further harm, she surrendered all the money to him. Keter then dragged her back toward the bar.

However, on the way, Jeptoo encountered police officers on patrol and reported the assault. Keter was arrested and later arraigned in court.

He denied the charges and was released on a cash bail of Sh30,000. The case will be mentioned on 10 June.
