Monicah Malith, the president of the University of Nairobi Student Association (UNSA), has urged the Ministry of Education to initiate discussions with university student leaders regarding the government's proposed new funding model.

Her statement arises amidst concerns regarding the criteria the government is utilizing to determine eligibility for funding.

Speaking on Citizen TV's Daybreak Friday show, Malith emphasized the need for the Ministry of Education to convene meetings and engage with university student leaders to address the new funding model. She particularly emphasized the importance of addressing issues related to loan repayment within the new system.

Under the new system, the government intends to prioritize vulnerable students, especially those from extremely needy and low-income households. If students are categorized as vulnerable, the government plans to cover 82 percent of their fees through scholarships, with the remaining 18 percent to be managed by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

Muchoki Kirera, the president of the Technical University of Kenya, expressed confusion regarding the details of the new funding model. He pointed out that they lack clarity on when the model will be implemented, its specific mechanisms, and the number of students who will benefit from these loans.

While university student leadership has voiced their support for the government's efforts, they are seeking greater transparency and clarification on various aspects of the new funding model.
