Actor and filmmaker Pascal Tokodi has paid an emotional tribute to Appie Matere, his late mentor and a respected figure in the Kenyan film industry.
In a heartfelt Instagram post on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, Tokodi described Matere as his guiding light, recalling how she took him under her wing early in his career.
“She was my mentor, my guiding light in film, and the reason I am where I am today,” he wrote.
He reflected on how Matere believed in him before he was fully ready and gave him opportunities that became the foundation of his filmmaking journey.
Tokodi shared that Matere immediately trusted him with work on African Magic Original Films (AMOF), where he contributed to over 60 productions.
This experience, he said, served as a crash course in filmmaking that shaped his skills and understanding of the industry.

Over the years, he noted, Matere continued to support him, offering guidance and encouragement during challenging moments, including online criticism.
Beyond her mentorship, Tokodi highlighted Matere’s broader impact on the Kenyan film scene. She created platforms for emerging talent, nurtured creative voices, and contributed to telling authentic Kenyan stories.
“Many of us are here because she opened doors and believed in us,” he added, emphasising the legacy she leaves behind.
He concluded his tribute with gratitude and admiration for her kindness, humanity, and the lessons she imparted.
“Thank you, mama, for the doors you opened, the lessons you gave, and the legacy you leave behind in our industry and in our lives. I will always be grateful. Fly, my friend,” Tokodi wrote.
The Kenyan film community, including the Kenya Film Commission, has joined in mourning her loss. In posts on social media, the Commission described her as an extraordinary producer, a true trailblazer whose passion, creativity, and commitment helped shape and elevate Kenya’s film industry.
They added: “Your legacy lives on through the stories you told, the lives you touched, and the paths you opened for generations of filmmakers to come. You will be remembered, celebrated, and deeply missed. 🕊️ Rest in power, Appie Matere.”
