Everything You Need to Know About State Funeral and Why Raila Odinga Qualified

The late ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga is set to be honoured with a state funeral, as announced by the national funeral committee.

But not everyone understands what a state funeral really means, who qualifies for it, and why it stands as one of the highest honours a country can give its citizens.

What is a State funeral?

A state funeral in Kenya is a rare event reserved for individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to the nation’s history, leadership, or unity.

It is a symbol of national respect, complete with military honours, a day of mourning, and public ceremonies attended by top state officials and international dignitaries.

In Kenya, a state funeral is not strictly defined in law but is authorised by the President in consultation with the Defence Council. It involves official participation from the government, armed forces, and religious leaders.

The event often includes a military procession, a 21-gun salute, and a national day of mourning.

Historically, the honour has been reserved for sitting or former presidents.

However, a few other national figures, such as former Vice President Michael Wamalwa and former environmentalist Wangari Maathai, have also been granted this recognition.

In each case, the President’s declaration and the individual’s service to the country determined eligibility.

Raila Odinga’s inclusion among this small group is a reflection of his long public service, political resilience, and influence on Kenya’s democratic journey.

Why does Raila qualify for a State funeral?

For more than four decades, he championed multiparty politics, human rights, and national reforms.

His leadership, courage, and vision helped shape Kenya’s political landscape, earning him respect both locally and abroad.

The decision to honour Raila with a state funeral recognises his role as one of Kenya’s most enduring political figures.

His efforts in the fight for democracy, his contribution to the 2010 Constitution, and his push for unity through the 2018 Handshake remain defining moments in Kenya’s history.

The ceremony, scheduled for Friday, October 17, 2025, at Nyayo National Stadium, is expected to bring together leaders and citizens in one of the largest gatherings of national reflection in recent memory.

After the main service, Raila will be laid to rest at his home in Bondo, Siaya County.

While his passing has left a deep void, the upcoming state funeral is a reminder of the enduring power of legacy, a symbol of how a life dedicated to justice and nation-building continues to inspire generations.

Raila Odinga’s farewell will not only mark the end of an era but also celebrate the ideals of service, sacrifice, and patriotism that define Kenya’s democratic spirit.
