England wrapped up their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in impressive fashion, defeating Costa Rica 3-0 in an international friendly played in Orlando on Wednesday night, June 10, 2026.
Declan Rice opened the scoring in the ninth minute after benefiting from a move initiated by Anthony Gordon in the ninth minute. The midfielder’s effort took a slight deflection before finding the back of the net, giving England an early advantage.
Formation
Tuchel handed Jude Bellingham a starting role in an advanced midfield position, and the Real Madrid star made a strong case for inclusion in the starting lineup for England’s World Cup campaign. The midfielder was influential throughout, creating opportunities and linking play effectively.
One of England’s best first-half chances came when Bellingham released Noni Madueke through on goal. After rounding goalkeeper Patrick Sequeira, the attacker appeared certain to score but struck the post instead.
England continued to dominate possession and territory after the break. Their persistence paid off in the 68th minute when substitute Eberechi Eze’s goal-bound effort was blocked by a Costa Rican hand inside the area. With Harry Kane no longer on the pitch, Gordon stepped up and confidently converted the resulting penalty to double England’s lead.
The Three Lions completed the scoring late in the match when substitute Ollie Watkins rose highest to head home from close range in the 87th minute, capping a performance that reflected England’s superiority throughout the contest.
Before beginning their World Cup journey, England will participate in a closed-door training match against Miami FC, allowing Tuchel another opportunity to assess his squad and fine-tune tactical plans.
Ideal preparation for England
Unlike England’s previous friendly victory over New Zealand, which offered limited resistance, Costa Rica provided a sterner examination. The Central Americans defended resolutely, competed aggressively, and forced England to work hard for openings.
The encounter gave Tuchel exactly the kind of competitive test he was seeking as he finalises his plans for the tournament.
Anthony Gordon emerged as one of England’s standout performers. The winger played a key role in Rice’s opener, constantly troubled the Costa Rican defence and added a goal of his own from the penalty spot.

Bellingham once again demonstrated his exceptional quality, producing moments of creativity and energy that highlighted his importance to the team. Meanwhile, defender John Stones continued his return to full fitness by completing 63 minutes, strengthening his chances of featuring against Croatia.
With one final practice match remaining, Tuchel now faces important selection decisions as England prepare to launch their bid for World Cup glory.
Anthony Gordon earned the highest rating from supporters after an influential display that included an assist and a goal. Rice, Elliot Anderson and Watkins also received strong ratings following England’s dominant victory.
