Tanzanian artist Zuchu has apologized houra after BASSFU banned her from performing in Zanzibar.
The talented songstress faced suspension by Zanzibar Arts, Census, Film and Cultural Council (BASSFU) for six months effective as of yesterday.
The decision the firms made after they deemed certain aspects of her performance at the Full Moon Kendwa Night concert to be “inconsistent with local cultural norms and social beliefs.”
According to the council, Zuchu’s videos and images caused uproar among Zanzibar residents who considered them not in line with their cultural norms and social beliefs.
BASSFU launched an investigation following online circulation of visual content from the concert, which sparked public concern.
The investigation confirmed violations of cultural norms, leading to the suspension and a Ksh 1 million fine. Furthermore, BASSFU discovered that Zuchu had not registered with the council, as required for performing artists, and lacked the necessary permits for the event.
In response Zuchu, has issued an official apology, clarifying that her performance was intended for entertainment purposes and not meant to disrespect the people of Zanzibar.
Nashukuru sana baraza la sanaa Tanzania," Zuchu relayed in the recorded video.
