MCA Zipporah Kinya, the mover of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment motion, has alleged threats to her life from the governor’s supporters.
During the Senate impeachment hearing on Monday, the MCA said the individuals attempted to burn her property on the eve of filing her motion.
She claimed part of her cow shed was burnt, and that the security guard raised the alarm of the incident and other workers managed to extinguish the fire.
According to Kinya, she and other MCAs felt threatened to the point of sleeping in the county assembly after receiving threats from the members of the public.
She alleged that another arson attempt occurred in the county assembly at 3:00 am, at a time when the MCAs were present.
“We were in the county assembly because of security reasons. There were so many threats on our lives and I would want to report that in my own home, there was an attempt. There were people who had threatened to block roads leading to the assembly,” she noted.
“The threats were given by some members of the public including a video of attempted arson in my home. In summary, the threats were coming from supporters of the Meru governor.”
She confirmed that her motion underwent public participation, with 85 per cent of the public in support of the motion.
“The public participation was done on August 5, 2024, in the 45 wards of Meru and it was very successful, it was both qualitative and quantitative,” she noted.
The Senate will continue the special sitting on Tuesday, whereby the governor will be given a chance to present her case before the House.
This will be followed by closing statements by the parties. The Senate shall then debate and then vote on each of the charges levelled against the governor.
If the majority votes to uphold the charges, Mwangaza shall cease to hold office.
However, if the majority votes against the charges, the governor will be saved by the Senate for the third time.
