YY: Earning money on YouTube is more challenging than it seems

Comedian and Content Creator YY (Oliver Otieno) argues that earning money from YouTube has become increasingly difficult. He explains that creators now struggle to make significant profits due to the high production costs involved.
YY provides a breakdown of the expenses for a single YouTube content shoot. For instance, hiring three cameras costs around Sh18,000, plus an additional Sh6,000 for battery mounts. Studio lighting costs Sh5,000, and a Zoom Recorder adds another Sh6,500. Factoring in tripods, lenses, transportation, venue charges, and food for the crew, the total can reach at least Sh100,000 per shoot. To earn this amount from a single video, YY notes that one would need approximately two million views.
He advocates for collaborations among artists as a way to build brands and attract sponsorships, suggesting that depending solely on YouTube revenue is no longer viable.
Filmmaker and content creator Abel Mutua also highlighted the high costs of producing content, revealing he spends around Sh200,000 per day for his YouTube shoots. His crew includes 17 members, with a three-camera setup, two video editors, a producer, and a stenographer.
