The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has released data regarding the status of various cases of hate speech that it is handling.
According to NCIC Chairperson Samuel Kobia, the commission has received 67 cases, 43 of which are under various stages of investigation. Kobia added that two cases are before court, 13 have been concluded while 13 others have been conciliated under the NCI Act of 2008.
Concerning social media issues, the commission flagged 44 discrimination cases out of which 24 cases are on incitement, 6 on hate speech, 93 on misinformation, and 68 on disinformation totaling to 268 cases..
The cases have been collected between November 2023 to date.
The most recent is that of Dadaab Member of Parliament Farah Maalim who was summoned to appear before the Commission on Thursday to shed light on his controversial comments regarding the recent protests against controversial Finance Bill 2024.
NCIC said it is investigating utterances made by the MP in Somali language, where he said he would 'slaughter 5000 Gen Z protesters' if he were president of Kenya.
"The utterances are likely to incite feelings of contempt, hatred, hostility, violence or discrimination, and affect harmonious coexistence between groups of different political affiliations in Kenya, contrary to Section 13 (1) (a) of the NCI Act," NCIC said.
The MP did not honour the summons on Thursday.
