Residents of Lwala village in Sirembe located in Gem Wagai, Siaya County are mourning the death of a 72-year-old man.
The deceased, identified as Kevin Owino Owako, was prospecting for gold when a shaft caved in.
“He was working alongside his colleagues Paul Odhiambo and Denis Otieno,” Sirembe Chief Peter Adede said.
Following the impact from the collapsing shaft, the deceased died on the spot.
Chief Adede, who reported the matter at Sirembe police station, said that the incident happened at around 3.00 am.
Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo added that a stone, which came tumbling down, fell on the head of the victim.
“His colleagues struggled and pulled him out while trying to resuscitate him, but their efforts were futile,” Kimaiyo said.
The body was taken to Yala Sub County Hospital mortuary.
