A dam broke its walls on Monday, April 29, causing flooding in Kianduma Bridge which caused flash floods in Kamuchiri Village in Nakuru County.
The flashfloods affected the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway at Mai Mahiu where vehicles had been stuck in a traffic jam overnight.
Reports indicate that a bus belonging to Easy Coach company was swept away by the floods.
Luckily, at the time of the incident, passengers had disembarked from the vehicle which had been travelling from Narok to Nairobi.
Additionally, other vehicles which had been caught in the snarl-up were also affected as the raging waters swept them off the road.
"Several people have been taken to a health facility in Mai Mahiu due to flash floods affecting Kamuchiri Village," Kenya Red Cross updated on the crisis.
"The Kenya Police, County Disaster team, Kenya Red Cross and community members are at the scene."
Mai Mahiu region has been one of the most affected regions in Kenya due to the intense downpour that has persisted throughout March.
Apart from flash floods affecting the busy highway, huge rocks have also started falling in the middle of the road causing danger to motorists.
A product of these factors and misfortunes has caused a perennial traffic snarl-up in the region inconveniencing Kenyans travelling to Western, Nyanza and parts of Rift Valley.
Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has been working round the clock to ensure that the busy highway is passable.
Additionally, volunteers from the Kenya Red Cross rescue team are on standby to evacuate and help Kenyans who are affected by the floods.
