Azimio leader Raila Odinga on Thursday apologised to leaders and journalists who were caught up in the mayhem that ensued during Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s presser.
In a statement, Odinga revealed that some individuals who were unknown to the parties and who were youthful invaded the venue and began ejecting participants.
Odinga expressed regret over the incident at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation (JOOF) and vowed to seal all the loopholes that led to the tragedy.
According to the former Prime Minister, the coalition will ensure that journalists and leaders who attend Azimio functions remain safe and free.
Odinga disclosed he received reports that journalists who had been invited to cover the coalition meeting were roughed up by goons who invaded the premises.
“Raila Odinga regrets the events of yesterday and this early opportunity to offer unreserved apologies to the journalists and fellow leaders who got caught up in the unfortunate incident," read part of the statement by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader.
"The venue of yesterday's meeting has successfully hosted important events at more defining moments in the country, without any such ugly incidents."
On Wednesday evening, Kalonzo Musyoka was forced to cut short his speech after goons invaded the Azimio coalition venue while he was briefing the press.
The chaos ensued minutes after Rail Odinga left the venue in the company of other coalition leaders because he had an urgent matter to attend to.
Kalonzo and his team were momentarily forced to cut their presser short before being whisked away to safety as chaos intensified.
The alleged intruders could be heard shouting at the Wiper party leader alleging that the meeting was over and ordered everyone out, including members of the media.
“Our meeting is over, everyone should leave! People from the media get out now!” the goons chanted.
