Nigerian star Ayra Starr reveals unique way she came up with her stage name

Globally acclaimed Nigerian artist Ayra Starr is opening up on how she chose her stage name and the inspiration behind it.

The 'Rush' hitmaker born. Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe in a tête-à-tête with Arise News, Morning Show revealed that at first she used to go by the moniker Oyin a nod to her birth name before she blew up.

Dishing out the details, Ayra confessed she initially fancied being called "Ira" in Yoruba vibes but craved a little extra swag to the name.

Her vision? She craved a name that echoed in Yoruba like a symphony but with a twist. So, she toyed with "Ira," craving that sultry Yoruba sound, yet she wanted the world to call her "Ayra."

How did she make this linguistic magic happen? Drumroll, please – she Googled it! Yes, you heard it right. She googled "Ayra" and voila, the meaning stole her heart.

"The only people could pronounce it is if I wrote Ira as Ayra. And when I googled the meaning of the name Ayra, everything just came together. It was like God was talking to me and I was like mmhh perfect," excitedly said the first time Grammy nominee.

For her second name, the 21 year old fully credits her manager Don Jazzy of Mavin records.

According to Ayra, Don Jazzy wanted every living soul to recognize Ayra for what she truly is – a star in the making. And voicing anything less just wouldn't do.

"Starr was Don Jazzy's idea. He was like Ayra is a star and the whole world must know it," the Nigerian artist added.
