Nairobi: Police officers burnt with acid while pursuing a thief

Three police officers who were pursuing a suspect in Nairobi's Ngara area are nursing burn wounds on the face after encountering hostile residents on Monday.

According to a police report, the incident ensued after officers Tom Mbuku, Moses Lelei and Joyce Otieno were pursuing a suspect on suspicion of carrying stolen drugs from Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD) to Ngara Medical Centre.

The suspect is said to have entered a facility and locked the door from inside to prevent entry.

Attempts by the officers to knock down the door were in vain as they demanded the suspect to surrender.

Minutes later, a lady namely Mororoi, 45, came out of the facility and laced the three officers with a chemical suspected to be acid.

A backup team was dispatched to the scene and rushed the three officers, who incurred serious injuries on the face and limbs, to Nairobi West Hospital.

Further, four people inside the facility namely Mwaura Karumba,60, Beatrice Kamba,36, Faith Mboga,22, and Rose Gitau,46, were arrested.

"Five litres of suspected sulphuric acid and assorted drugs recovered and kept as an exhibit," the report read in part.
