Matatu operators in Nairobi have threatened to go on strike, over lack of inclusion in the implementation of a city upgrade plan, that they say affects their business.
The matatu operators cited that many of the terminals they utilize across the city are being impacted by sudden road tarmacking projects, catching them off guard and causing operational disruptions.
"The matatu operators have cited violation and impunity being carried out by the Nairobi County government without looking at constitutional requirement, not limited to, a lack of public participation in the implementation of city upgrade program that has already resulted in business losses to our members," Jairus Okatsa, the matatu operators' representative said.
They further claim that the tarmacking initiatives occur without warning, making it difficult for them to adapt or find alternative terminals.
"The entire project is happening along Tom Mboya. From Koja, all the way to Haile Selassie, River Road, Latema Road and Acra Road. The affected termini is where most matatu operators operate from," Winfred Bosire, the matatu Sacco's chair, said.
The operators now want the Nairobi County government to involve them in the planning and development process.
