Mwamba RFC are fired up for the return of the Kenya Cup as they face KCB RFC at 2:00pm (EAT) on Saturday, at the RFUEA Grounds here in Nairobi.
Mwamba who had a dismal start to the Kenya Cup this season will be hoping to turn a leaf this weekend as the second part of the season kicks off with the tough assignment against the 8-time Kenya cup champions, KCB. Joseph Baabu is Mwamba’s assistant coach.
“The first half of the season wasn’t very good because we didn’t start on a high note considering our team was a bit unstable but for now the team is shaping up nicely.
"We have reinforced the squad with some seniors coming back plus some experienced players from other teams coming in, so we are looking forward to having a successful second half of this season; at least we also become competitive and not just participating,” said Baabu.
The 1983 Kenya cup champions have bolstered their ranks with the arrival of 13 new players with the likes of Steve Sikuta, Dan Suchi, and Xavier Kipngetich being part of the new gang and Baabu believes they will bring the much-needed leadership to the team.
“Basically, the main players that we have brought in are to bring in leadership because we already have a good squad but they are very young. So, we need a lot of leadership in the team so that they can guide the young lads in the team.
"When you look at the likes of Steven Sikuta, Dan Roxy, those are people who come with leadership skills that will help us; you know being a coach majority of the time you’re outside and you need leaders inside the team to guide the young lads. Those experienced players joining in is a positive for the team,” explained Baabu.
Mwamba have as well acquired the services of Ishmael Mokaya from Impala, Joseph Otieno, Joseph Rume, Mark Gitonga, Washington Ogido, Willis Owino and Collins Onyango all from Northern Suburbs while Benedict Matheka joins from NYS.
The RFUEA grounds will witness a double header as Kenya Harlequins later face neighbor and nemesis Impala RFC at 4:00pm.
Elsewhere, Kenya Cup newbies South Coast Pirates will be in Kisumu to face hosts Kisumu RFC, with Strathmore Leos playing hosts to defending champions Kabras Sugar.
Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad will battle Nondescripts. Nakuru derby will pit Nakuru RFC against Menengai Oilers at the Nakuru Athletic Club with the league entering match day four.
