KQ returns some fleet to service amid scarcity of spare parts

Kenya Airways (KQ) has announced the return of some of its fleet to service after being grounded for weeks due to challenges in acquiring spare parts.

In a statement on Friday, December 15, 2023, KQ announced that all its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet is now up and flying.

"We are delighted to share that we now have a significant number of components. This has enhanced our operational efficiency, allowing the return to service some of our aircraft that had been grounded. All our Boeing 787 Dreamliners fleet are now up and flying. Your safety and comfort are our priority, even as we work to resolve these challenges," KQ stated. 

The return of the fleet, KQ says, has minimised disruptions which were earlier announced and expected to persist during the festive season.

"We continue working closely with our partners and suppliers to expedite the timely delivery of components. This should keep disruptions, if any, down to a minimum. Recovery from disruptions across our network is still ongoing. Consequently, our flight-deck crew roster has been impacted. However, a disruption management plan is currently being executed in conjunction with our pilots and pilots' union. We anticipate full recovery during this festive season," KQ added.

A week ago, KQ announced flight disruptions during the festive period amid increased demands.

In a statement, KQ CEO Allan Kilavuka said that the disruptions were attributed to challenges in acquiring spare parts from the global market.

"In light of the increased demand for air travel during this festive season, we want to share some important information with you. Our current flight schedule may experience disruptions in the coming weeks mainly due to challenges in the aircraft spare parts global supply chain," Kilavuka stated.

The KQ boss said the challenges are leading to extended ground time of aircraft for maintenance.

"Additionally, this may also lead to grounding one or more of our aircraft in line with our commitment to the highest level for safety and reliability of our operations," he added.

"We understand the impact that schedule changes can have on your travel plans, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Please be assured that our team is working tirelessly to minimize these disruptions and to keep you informed every step of the way."

The flight disruptions were expected to extend for two weeks.
