Kimani Ichungwah emphasizes the role of internal auditors in safeguarding against corruption

Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has called upon internal auditors to spearhead efforts in upholding good governance standards.

Addressing attendees at the 21st Internal Auditors Annual Seminar in Mombasa, convened under the theme "New Horizons: Securing the Future," Ichung’wah emphasized the pivotal role of internal auditors in safeguarding against corruption and promoting transparency.

In his address, Ichung’wah drew attention to the pressing issue of the authenticity of fertilizer distribution channels, despite the presence of internal auditors in institutions like the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) and the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).

He underscored the imperative for heightened vigilance and integrity in the face of persistent malpractice.

"From where I sit, whether the fake fertilizer came from the National Cereals and Produce Board or KEBS, there are internal auditors at NCPB or KEBS who certified that all the processes had been followed. There are internal auditors at NCPB who check what is going on and are privy to much more information than external auditors or any other investigative body that would come in,” Ichungwah said.

Ichung’wah asserted that internal auditors play a critical role in mainstreaming good governance and stressed the importance of unwavering commitment to ethical principles.

Reflecting on the broader landscape of resource mismanagement, both in the public and private sectors, Ichung’wah lamented the culture of wastage and corruption. He emphasized the need for internal auditors to serve as frontline defenders of integrity within their respective environments.

"As professionals, we have a moral obligation and a national duty to be the forefront defenders of good governance and the effective and efficient utilization of resources in a participatory, transparent, and accountable manner," declared Ichung'wah.

The seminar provided a platform for discussions on emerging challenges and opportunities in the field of internal auditing.

Participants engaged in dialogues centered on strategies for enhancing accountability, mitigating risks, and fostering a culture of integrity within organizations.
