Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse tells DP Gachagua to clarify the sources of his wealth

Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse has called on Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to clarify the source of his m,ulti-billion wealth.

During a session in the House on Tuesday, Mutuse alleged that the 22 properties referenced in his motion were acquired through a conflict of interest in government-related businesses.

He claimed Gachagua has used unexplained income to finance these purchases.

Mutuse pointed out that Gachagua did not deny owning the properties in a press conference on Monday, only stating that they were registered before he became Deputy President.

He cautioned MPs from Gachagua's argument that some properties belong to his late brother, Nderitu Gachagua.

“I have no issue with property ownership, but he must explain where the money for these acquisitions comes from,” Mutuse stated.

He confirmed that Gachagua is listed as an administrator of Nderitu’s estate and presented evidence from the joint will executor’s report dated June 27, 2024.

The MP accused Gachagua of coercing the sale of his late brother’s properties over the past two years.

He also questioned Gachagua’s statement about transferring his companies to his sons, who reportedly secured a Sh600,000 loan.

“I checked the IDs of those sons; they’re in their early 30s. Which Kenyan at 23 can walk into a bank and get that amount?” he asked.

In response to the grounds of impeachment on Monday, Gachagua denied the allegations of corruption, asserting that most of his assets belonged to his late brother, who passed away in 2017.

“My brother bequeathed his properties, including the Olive Garden Hotel and Vipingo Beach Resort, in his will,” Gachagua explained.

He added that he, Mwai Mathenge, and lawyer Njoroge were appointed executors of the will, adding that part of the funds in his account came from the sale of the Olive Garden Hotel as outlined in the will.
