Joseph Irungu alias 'Jowie' files notice of appeal against high Court ruling that sentenced him to death

Murder convict Joseph Irungu commonly known as Jowie has filed a notice of appeal against a High Court ruling that sentenced him to death for the 2018 murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.

The notice seen by Citizen Digital indicates that Jowie intends to challenge his conviction for the murder and subsequent sentencing by Lady Justice Grace Nzioka.

"Take notice that Joseph Kuria Irungu alias Jowie appeals to the Court of Appeal against the decisions of the Honourable Lady Justice Grace Nzioka delivered in open court at Milimani, Nairobi on the 9th day February 2024 and in her written judgment dated 9th February 2024 whereby the Appellant was convicted of Murder and sentenced to death on 13th March 2024."

"The appeal is against the conviction and sentence," reads the court document filed through his advocate Andrew Muge.

Jowie, who intends to be present at the hearing of the appeal, was convicted of murder and sentenced to death after he was found guilty of the brutal murder of Monica at her Lamuria Gardens apartment.

Justice Nzioka in handing Jowie the maximum sentence for murder said the punishment fits the heinous crime that cost 29-year old Monica her life.

The judge said she based her decision on the gravity of the evidence presented during the trial as well as the convict’s character.
