Johnson Sakaja, James Gakuya supporters clash during UDA grassroot elections in Nairobi

Chaos on Friday erupted at several polling centers during the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party grassroots elections in parts of Nairobi, leading to cancellation of the exercise.

At the South B center, supporters of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja who is running for the UDA Chairmanship in the capital clashed with those backing Embakasi North MP James Gakuya.

The situation escalated when a group of youths stormed the center, forcing election officials to be whisked to safety.

A blame game ensued between the factions, with Sakaja’s supporters lodging complaints at the party’s headquarters.

The grassroots elections are also being held in the counties of Narok, Busia, West Pokot, and Homa Bay counties.

Confusion had marred the process on Thursday when UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala announced a postponement of the elections in the said counties.

The statement was however later dismissed by the UDA National Elections Board (NEB) which accused Malala of attempting to usurp its powers.
