‘Watcha Say’ singer Jason Derulo has been sued for sexual harassment by an upcoming artiste who was signed to his label.
According to NBC News, 25-year-old Emaza Gibson filed her complaint on Thursday, October 6, accusing Derulo of quid pro quo sexual harassment (a favour or advantage granted in return for something).
Gibson said she joined the label with hopes of building a career for herself. She alleged that Derulo "maliciously" promised her ‘success’ but denied her the opportunity later.
"I'm at this point in my life right now, it's very heartbreaking. I have anxiety, I'm traumatised. I've dealt with inhumane work situations,” she said while talking to NBC.
According to court documents, Gibson was offered a contract to work with Derulo’s label Future History in August 2021, but they started working together in November of the same year.
She claimed that the ‘Talk Dirty’ artiste started making sexual advances towards her and pressuring her to go out with him, a request she continuously turned down.
In a lawsuit filed at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Gibson claimed that Derulo turned cold after the rejection and eventually dropped her from the deal.
She sued the artist over quid pro quo sexual harassment, breach of contract, intimidation, and violence, among other complaints.
Additionally, Gibson is seeking to claim loss of earnings, deferred compensation, unpaid wages as well as further damages for emotional distress and employment benefits.
In the lawsuit, she listed Derulo, his manager Frank Harris, RCA Records, Atlantic Records and Derulo’s Future History imprint, which is a joint venture with RCA.
However, Derulo, 34, took to his social media accounts to deny these allegations saying they are false.
“I wouldn’t normally comment, but the claims are completely false and hurtful. I stand against all forms of harassment and I remain supportive of anyone following their dreams,” read a post on his X account.
Adding: “I've always strived to live my life in a positively impactful way, and that's why I sit here before you deeply offended, by these defamatory claims. God bless.”
