It's over: Famous couples whose breakup shocked Kenyans

Marriage vows are designed for eternity but often crash and burn, especially when you are in the glamorous world of entertainment.
The drama, the heartbreak, the pain, the rumours, the scandals—it’s all there, and it’s as juicy as it gets!
The glitterati of Kenya’s media, arts, and religious circles face a barrage of issues that make “happily ever after” a distant dream.
The relentless glare of hawk-eyed media, never-ending schedules, trust issues, lack of privacy, and massive financial differences turn the love stories of celebrities into ticking time bombs. But hey, some survive against all odds, proving that love isn’t dead in the celeb world!
Kate Actress and Phil Director’s breakup
Catherine Kamau, aka Kate Actress, and her husband Philip Karanja, aka Phil Director, are the latest celebrity couple in headlines after their marriage hit a rock, pushing them out. They took to their Instagram pages to drop the bombshell—they’re calling it quits! But they’re not parting without a plea: “Respect our privacy,” they chorused.
Kate Actress spilled the beans, saying, “We came to a conclusion to end our marriage a long time ago and are separated. We sincerely request everyone to honour our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”
Phil Director said,” “Hii ni mambo ya watu wawili.”
Vera Sidika and Brown Mauzo
Brown Mauzo and Vera Sidika, formerly married, officially announced this week their split after nearly three years together.
Mauzo, a coast-based singer, shared the news on Instagram, days after Phill and Kate announced their divorce, thanking fans for their support and explaining their mutual decision to part ways. In his Instagram post, Mauzo stated, “Dear friends, Vera Sidika and I have chosen to part ways. While we’ve had memorable moments, it’s now in the best interest of both of us and our children.”
Mauzo thanked fans for their support and requested privacy as they embarked on the new chapter. Vera previously addressed breakup rumours in May, vowing not to use a breakup for publicity and urging against such tactics.
“Break-up clouts are lame, overused and retired. I have never done a breakup clout in more than five years. I always have unique ideas if I want to chase clout and y’all know it, not this,” she said.
“By the way, in case you didn’t know, not all breakups are caused by infidelity. There are a lot of issues that contribute. Life happens, people break up and move on.”
Betty Kyalo and Denis Okari’s six-month wonder
They were the TV power couple, and the internet went crazy when Betty Kyalo and Denis Okari tied the knot in 2015. But here’s the twist: six months later, it all went downhill! They flooded social media with power couple pictures, travel diaries, and heartwarming moments, only to crash and burn in record time.
Betty and Dennis are now co-parenting their six-year-old daughter, Ivanna. Denis found love again and said, “I do,” while Betty kept her love life on the down low. Who saw that coming?
Willis Raburu and Marya Prude
Media personality Willis Raburu and his wife Marya Prude’s love story hit the rocks three years after their lavish 2017 wedding. Their split coincided with the heartbreaking loss of their newborn daughter, Adana. Marya, in a candid moment, spilled the tea, regretting that she tied the knot at 23. She said, “I can’t believe I did that,” and believes marriage held her back from achieving her dreams. “I’d be way ahead now if I hadn’t succumbed to societal pressures,” she declared.
Willis admits he made his private life public, and now he’s all about keeping it private.
Anerlisa Muigai and Ben Pol
The Keroche Breweries heiress, Anerlisa Muigai, and Tanzanian artist Ben Pol are in the middle of a jaw-dropping divorce saga. They said “I do” on May 31, 2020, but it looks like that was just the beginning of their rollercoaster ride.
They are in the divorce process.
Ben Pol issued a public apology to Anerlisa for some not-so-nice comments he made about their marriage. He claimed it was all about sharing his personal experiences and the impact on his mental health. Anerlisa, on the other hand, is saying, “Move on, buddy, it’s over!”
Eunice Njeri’s whirlwind wedding
Gospel singer Eunice Njeri’s marriage to rapper Isaac Bukasa (Izzo) lasted less than a day. The wedding bells chimed; they said, “I do,” and then Eunice realised her heart wasn’t in it.
“To all who supported Isaac and me, I am grateful. May God bless you immensely. To all who were hurt in the process, I apologize,” Njeri was quoted in local dailies.
She explained in 2016 that their marriage was annulled.
