Ian Njoroge's lawyers reveal he was molested and manhandled during his arrest

The defence team representing assault suspect Ian Njoroge told the court on Tuesday that officers who arrested him handled him in an inhumane manner.

Appearing before Magistrate BenMark at the Milimani law courts, Duncan Okatch and Vincent Lempaa told the court that Njoroge, 19, was molested in his house at the time of the arrest.

A short video showing Njoroge being interrogated was also played in court which the prosecution argued is clear proof of mistreatment since the officers hurled insults at him.

"What the complainant did to him in that car, I can say he was manhandled by the complainant," the court was told.

"The accused is a first-year student in one of the public universities and he has a future that he is pursuing, he has parents and was arrested in the house of the parents. At the station he was beaten and the clothes he was on were blood stained."

Njoroge pleaded not guilty to robbery with violence, causing grievous harm and resisting arrest.

He is alleged to have committed the offences Sunday this year at Kamiti Road in Kasarani where he was seen assaulting a police officer during a traffic stop.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) asked the court to detain Njoroge for three days to allow the investigating officer to draft an affidavit.

"The investigating officer assigned the matter yesterday and had a short time to do the statements, get expert reports, and present the file to our office. He's not had time to put in an affidavit and we are objecting to his release on bail and we are asking for three days to allow police put in the affidavit," the court was told.

Court granted the prosecution one day to detain Njoroge at Industrial Area prison. To be escorted to Kenyatta Hospital and accompanied by a parent
