'I Am Prepared': Eugene Wamalwa Hints At 2027 Presidential Bid

Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) party leader Eugene Wamalwa has declared interest in the presidential 2027 race.

Wamalwa on Saturday revealed that the only two positions he is yet to hold are Deputy President and President.

However, he noted that at his age, he still has time to hold the above positions.

"I believe I'm sufficiently prepared and experienced to lead this country and I have already been endorsed by my party for the presidency," Wamalwa said during an interview on NTV

"I am in the process of preparing for my presidential beat," he added.

Wamalwa, who is also the former Defense Cabinet Secretary highlighted that the DAP-K party is in the process of carrying out a membership recruitment drive to strengthen the party at the grassroots.

He said that the party will soon hold grassroots elections and will eventually have a national delegates meeting to ratify his presidential bid.

Looking back, the former CS explained that he had defied his dream of running for presidency since 2013 but has been biding his time serving this country in various key positions.

Mentioning former President Uhuru Kenyatta and President William Ruto, Wamalwa believes that If his peers managed to get to State House, he can also do it.

"I believe a day is coming when my spear will also get there (State House)," he added.

In 2013, it was revealed that Uhuru Kenyatta had picked Wamalwa as his running mate ahead of the general elections but had to instead settle on President Ruto so as to enhance his chances of winning the presidency.

The duo went on to defeat the joint Raila Odinga and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka ticket by more than 800,000 votes in the hotly contested elections.

Wamalwa's political career

The former Defense CS practised law as his profession privately until in 2003 when his brother former Vice President Kijana Wamalwa and Member of Parliament for Saboti died.

Wamalwa then decided to vie for the parliamentary seat of Saboti in the by election under the Republican Party of Kenya but he lost to Davies Wafula Nakitare of NARC.

In the 2007 elections, he again vied for the Saboti parliamentary seat on FORD Kenya under the PNU banner and won.

Wamalwa also served as minister for Justice and Legal Affairs during the period up to 2013 when he showed interest in vying for the presidency.

However, he shelved his ambitions to support now Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi of Amani National Congress.

In 2015 Former President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Wamalwa to serve as the Cabinet Secretary first the Ministry of Water and Irrigation services until January 2018 when he was moved to the Ministry of Devolution and ASAL areas.

He served there for about three years until 2021 when he was moved to the Ministry of Defense.

Wamlwa held the position until the 2022 general elections that was won by the President Ruto-led Kenya Kwanza coalition.
