Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi is facing charges on incitement to violence after rallying kenyans to occupy the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon.
This is the same charge he encountered in July 2024 during the peak of the protests against the Finance Bill.
According to Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo, who was also present at Kamkunji Police Station, Mwangi’s detention is a violation of human rights.
Initially, authorities aimed to detain the activist for 21 days while they conduct their investigations.
However, he was ultimately released on a Ksh 20,000 bail, along with four other suspects.
This is after a group of Kenyans turned to social media to call for the release of Activist Boniface Mwangi who was reportedly abducted by unknown individuals.
His wife, Njeri Mwangi, confirmed the distressing news.
She stated that at approximately 7:15 am, six unidentified people arrived at their home, forcefully taking her husband.
Njeri expressed her confusion and concern, saying, “I have no idea who they are, why they took him, or where he has been taken.”
The news ignited outrage among Kenyans, who blamed the government for the increasing incidents of abduction.
In a clear reference to Mwangi’s case, former LSK President Eric Theuri criticized the use of police to instill fear and suppress citizens’ rights to express their opinions.
