The government has extended a dusk-to-dawn curfew in 13 locations within Marsabit County for 30 days amid ongoing stability concerns in the region.

Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen said that the curfew will commence on December 23 from 6:30 pm since the areas have been designated as “security-disturbed and dangerous”.

“The extension underscores ongoing security concerns, with authorities citing persistent threats to both residents and property in these communities,” he noted.

The affected locations include Hillo Gorgora, Hillo Orofa, Hillo Walkite, Hillo Tanzania, Hillo Irress Abamartille, Hillo Gootu, Hillo Tessum Qalicha, Hillo Karray and Hillo Hudda.

Others are Hillo Qoranjido, Hillo Irress Shindia, Hillo Rabaalee and Hillo Godde Haroressa.

The declaration is backed by a prohibition on the possession of firearms in the affected areas.

“Residents found with firearms are required to surrender them immediately to the nearest police station, police post, police camp, or National Government Administration office during daylight hours,” read Murkomen’s directive in part.

Surrendered firearms will be returned to their lawful owners once the security notice is lifted or revoked.

CS Murkomen also noted that police officers will be monitoring compliance in the designated zones to help curb armed violence and improve safety.

Members of the public have been urged to cooperate with security agencies and comply with firearm surrender directives where applicable.
