The government has created three administrative sub-regions in Nairobi in what it says is part of a broader plan to improve efficiency and enhance service delivery to the people.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Thursday announced the establishment of Nairobi North, Nairobi East, and Nairobi West Service Delivery Coordination Units, citing the city’s growing population of more than five million.

He said the reorganisation follows the recently concluded Jukwaa La Usalama public forums, where the government pledged to decentralise operations and make services more accessible to wananchi.

“During the recently concluded Jukwaa La Usalama public forums, we promised to restructure and reinvigorate the National Administration to serve the people of Kenya better. We are committed to bringing services closer to wananchi through deliberate decentralisation and efficiency enhancement,” Murkomen said in a statement.

The CS noted that each of the three new sub-regions will be led by officials in the rank of County Commissioner, who will in turn be reporting to the Regional Commissioner for Nairobi Region.

Rose Wanjiru Chege will head Nairobi West, Patrick Simiyu Werre takes charge of Nairobi East, while Simon Odhiambo Osumba will oversee Nairobi North.

In a subsequent gazette notice seen by Citizen Digital, Murkomen noted that Nairobi North sub-region will contain Roysambu, Ruaraka, Kasarani, Kamukunji and Mathare sub-counties, while Nairobi West will entail Lang’ata, Kibra, Dagoretti North, Dagoretti South, and Westlands.

Nairobi East, on the other hand, will be composed of; Embakasi East, Embakasi West, Embakasi North, Embakasi South, Embakasi Central, as well as Njiru and Makadara.

In the same light, Interior CS Murkomen also promoted several County Commissioners and them redeployed to new stations across the country.

Among them are Joseph Mwangi Wamuti (Tana River), Linda Adhiambo Okola (Taita Taveta), David Ntawuasa Saruni (West Pokot), Michael K. Yator (Kajiado), Jeremiah Mwai Gicheru (Kericho), and Peter Mwangi Maina (Vihiga).

Murkomen said the changes, which take effect immediately, are informed by individual officers’ strengths and experiences, as well as feedback from the Jukwaa La Usalama consultations.
