General Charles Kahariri Muriu has been sworn in as the new Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).

President William Ruto presided over the swearing-in ceremony of the CDF and the top command of Kenya Defence Forces at State House, Nairobi.

Kahariri, who takes over from the late Francis Ogolla, pledged to uphold, protect and defend the Constitution; the people and Republic of Kenya while discharging his duties.

"I will diligently serve the people and the republic without fear, favour, bias, affection, ill-will, prejudice, or any political, religious or other influence," he said.

Major General Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed, who is the new Kenya Air Force Commander was also took an oath of office. Major General Paul Owuor Otieno was also sworn in as the commander of the Kenya Navy.

Pledging his support and goodwill, President Ruto called on the KDF's top brass to discharge their mandate diligently, describing it as a solemn responsibility.

"You have taken charge of the leadership of the KDF. The appointment that has been bestowed on you is to serve the republic and the people of Kenya. You must remember that exercising authority comes with responsibility and accountability," the president said.

Going down memory lane, the president lauded the KDF for its long-standing history as a professional, loyal and committed unit. He called on the KDF leadership to uphold the standards in line with their oath of office; and assist other agencies in their roles.

"None of you has been appointed to serve your communities or religions. Your assignment is to the people of Kenya," the president added.

President William Ruto promoted Kahariri to the rank of General and appointed him the new Chief of the Defence Forces on Thursday.

General Kahariri's appointment comes two weeks after General Francis Ogolla died in a copter crash alongside nine other military officers.
