President William Ruto has issued a cautionary message, highlighting that numerous African countries are becoming increasingly indebted due to the impact of climate change. Speaking during the second day of the inaugural Africa Climate Summit held at the KICC, Ruto emphasized that African nations are shouldering the heaviest burden of the climate crisis.
Ruto asserted that the suffering caused by climate-related issues is widespread, encompassing regions like the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, and South Africa, where droughts and cyclones have taken a toll. However, he underscored that the African continent bears the greatest brunt of these challenges.
The President also pointed out that Kenya has been compelled to redirect resources originally earmarked for economic development towards addressing the repercussions of climate change. He recounted the loss of two and a half million livestock in northern Kenya and a combined loss of nine million livestock when considering Somalia and Djibouti.
Furthermore, Ruto mentioned that he had to allocate additional resources to school feeding programs, expanding their reach from one and a half million school children to four million. He concluded by emphasizing that climate change is wreaking havoc on the economies of African nations.
