Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua says the government has set aside Ksh.300 million to help victims of the Mai Mahiu floods get new homes.
Gachagua who spoke on Wednesday while attending the funeral service next to the scene of the tragedy that left 61 people dead said that the government has already established a land to resettle the displaced families.
The Department of Housing has been tasked to be ready, to start construction of new homes for the 185 families displaced by the floods.
“The president has already promised to allocate land to settle the families…we have agreed with the Housing PS that his department will give Ksh.300 million to start building the houses in that land,” Gachagua said.
“On top of that, Safaricom will chip in and other private firms to try and assist in settling the victims.”
The DP went on to say that more than Ksh.7 million had also been allocated to cater for the victims' burials adding that each family will be getting between Ksh.150,000 and Ksh.200,000.
"As the government, we have mobilized resources and given more than Ksh.7 million to help the families bury their loved ones. Every family around here will get Ksh.150,000 and those from far Ksh.200,000,” he said.
Gachagua at the same time thanked area leaders for supporting the government in ensuring the welfare of the victims is well taken care of.
"I also want to thank Governor Susan Kihika for paying all the hospital bills and mortuary charges so that these people do not have that burden," he stated.
"It is a difficult situation but we are now debating with the county government to see how we will help the victims to rebuild afresh. We are going to walk with you on this journey.
