A nephew of Deputy Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli has been charged with defrauding Kenyans of Ksh2 million in a fake police recruitment scam.

The suspect was charged by the prosecution side after being arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on Monday, December 8.

The suspect had allegedly promised seven parents of unsuspecting job seekers positions within the National Police Service in exchange for money.

The suspect, who denied all charges, was released on a Ksh1million bond by the court.

The announcement comes two weeks after an officer from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) apprehended another individual who extorted Ksh2.5 million from unsuspecting Job seekers in a similar manner.

The suspect was taken into custody after three victims alleged that he promised them positions within the National Police Service in exchange for money.

According to the detectives, the suspect used forged recruitment letters to persuade victims to part with hefty sums of money for slots in the police service.

The suspect was apprehended on Saturday, November 22, after detectives ambushed him at the Sagret Hotel in Kilimani.

During the raid, the detectives managed to recover 20 fake police recruitment letters that he had in the hotel.

"When detectives stormed the premises, they recovered twenty more fake police recruitment letters, exposing what looks like a well-oiled fraud operation. His accomplice, however, escaped the moment he sniffed danger, slipping through before officers could pin him down," DCI stated.

"The DCI urges members of the public to beware of fake police recruiters and reminds them that genuine enlistment into the National Police Service is free, fair, and transparent," it added.
