Cyber harassment case against Morara Kebaso dismissed

Cyber harassment case against Morara Kebaso dismissed

A court in Nairobi dismissed the charges against activist Morara Kebaso on Friday ruling that the charge sheet against him was defective.

Speaking after appearing in court on behalf of the activist, his lawyer Pareno Solanka revealed that the activist is free and the court has directed that the bail he had paid be reimbursed.

"Morara has been released, bail to be returned to him", the lawyer revealed.

Morara had been arraigned in court on Tuesday on cyber harassment charges after publishing posts on President William Ruto and billionaire David Langat.

Morara had been charged with cyber harassment under Section 27 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act No. 5 of 2018.

In the charge sheet, Kebaso was accused of posting false information on his X account on 28 September, with the intent of tarnishing businessman David Langat’s reputation.

The post allegedly claimed that President William Ruto had approached Langat for financial assistance during his campaign, leading Langat to take out large loans using his properties as collateral.

“William Ruto approached DL Langat and told him he desperately needed more money for the campaign. DL Langat used his properties as security and took big loans to help his friend," read part of the charge sheet.

Following his sentiments, Morara was arrested dramatically in Nairobi by masked police, who confiscated his phones and laptop before driving him away.

The activist was subsequently presented in court and released on a Ksh50,000 bail.

Earlier on Friday, Morara was roughed up at the Bomas of Kenya where he sought to contribute on deputy president Rigathi Gachagua's public participation.

Morara received a hostile reception with delegates throwing chairs at him, forcing him to scamper for safety and exit the venue.

Hours later, the lawyer revealed that he had gone to hospital to seek medical attention.

"I was barred from entering Bomas at the gate. When I finally got in, I was denied the mic on Bomas floor. Chaos erupted. I am hurt. Headed to hospital. I live to speak another day," Kebaso said on his X page.
