The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has invited applications for the positions of Court of Appeal and High Court judges.

In a gazette, Chief Justice Martha Koome, who doubles up as chair of JSC, declared 11 vacancies in the Court of Appeal and five in the High Court.

Eligible candidates are required to submit their applications through the JSC portal.

"Pursuant to section 30 of the Judicial Service Act and section 3 Part II of the First Schedule, of the Judicial Service Act (No. I of 2011), I, Martha K. Koome, Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya, for and on behalf of the Judiciary of Kenya, declare vacancies in the Office of Judge of the Court of Appeal of the Republic of Kenya. Job details: Ref: V/No. 2/2024 Job title: Judge of the Court of Appeal Number of posts: Eleven (11) posts," the CJ said.

The mandatory retirement age for both the Court of Appeal and High Court judges is 70 years. However, the judicial officers can opt for an early retirement after attaining the age of 65 years.

CJ Koome also noted that Court of Appeal Judges would earn a minimum of Ksh775,845 and a maximum of Ksh1,187,152 in monthly gross salary as stipulated by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

On the other hand, High Court judges are entitled to a gross monthly remuneration package of between Ksh657,426 and Ksh1,000,974.

The minimum requirements for the positions include, among others, a law degree and at least 10 years experience in the legal field.

Koome's declaration comes weeks after President William Ruto and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula committed to supporting budgetary allocations to facilitate the recruitment of an additional 25 judges of the High Court and 11 judges in the Court of Appeal.

During the meeting held at State House Nairobi on January 22, it was also agreed that the Executive would provide resources to conclude the vehicle leasing program to facilitate the judiciary’s transport needs.

"The Executive, Legislature and Judiciary commit to performing their functions in a manner that respects, promotes and enhances the rule of law, institutional independence and respect for court decisions," State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said in a statement.
