The memorial service for beloved Kikuyu gospel singer Betty Bayo turned into an intensely emotional scene yesterday at the CFF Church in Kiambu Town.
While friends, family, and fans gathered to pay their respects, it was the raw, heartfelt tribute delivered by her young son, Danny, that caused many in attendance to openly weep.
The service, held ahead of the singer's expected burial, was a celebration of her life.
A Mother's Love Remembered
Danny, visibly emotional, took the podium to speak about the woman who was "my whole world". His words painted a clear picture of a loving and adventurous mother. He described her as the person he could call "anytime".
He recalled how she would often appear with affection, sometimes bringing "KFC in your hands”.
“You would show up with love. Sometimes, even with KFC in your hands. Sometimes telling us to get ready for a trip or small adventure.”
Danny detailed how his mother’s actions frequently turned ordinary days into special memories. She would sometimes tell them to prepare for a "trip or small adventure".
These spontaneous moments were essential, he explained, because they showed him how she felt and made him feel "so special and seen".
“Those moments told me how you feel. Those moments made me feel so special and seen.”
Missing Her Voice and Hugs
The young man shared the intimate details he would miss most about his mother. He spoke lovingly about the simple things, like how she called his name. He also cherished how she made him laugh.
Danny noted that her hugs had a powerful, healing effect, saying that her "hugs made everything feel again".
His tribute conveyed the deep connection they shared, highlighting her almost intuitive understanding of his needs. He mentioned that she "always knew what we needed without us even saying it". He reiterated that he will deeply miss her voice and her smile.
A Promise to Live Proudly
Despite the overwhelming grief, Danny expressed a firm commitment to honour his mother's memory and wishes. He affirmed that even though she is no longer physically present, he will carry her love "everywhere I go".
Danny made a solemn promise to strive to live in a way that would make her proud. Furthermore, he vowed to look after his father and his sister, just as his mother had always desired.

"I will try best to live in a way that makes you proud. I will look after dad, my sister and just as you always wanted."
He concluded his moving speech by thanking his mother for "loving me so completely" and filling his life with joy, surprises, and memories he will never forget.
He assured her that he will love her forever and that she will "always be my heart". The service was momentarily silenced by the powerful expression of eternal love and grief.
