48 Members of Parliament from the Mt Kenya region and the diaspora have declared their allegiance to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as the battle for the control of the Mt Kenya region gathers momentum.
In what will no doubt pan out as a do-or-die duel between Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and the Interior CS ahead of 2027, the new lot joins a group of 20 others from Mt Kenya region who named Kindiki as their political godfather on Monday.
The endorsement of Kindiki as their link to the Executive is the latest blow to the second in command who would ordinarily be the point man of the region to the national government.
In a meeting held in Nyahururu on Thursday, the MPs said that after consultations, they have agreed that there is a need to have a link that will create a nexus with the Executive on matters of development.
The MP said they had unanimously resolved that the link would be Prof. Kindiki.
"We, as the elected leaders from this region and its Diaspora on our behalf and that of our people, unanimously resolve that our link to the National Government be the Cabinet Secretary for the Interior and National Administration Prof. Kithure Kindiki, whose responsibilities include the coordination of National Government functions across Country," the MPs said.
The declaration comes barely four days after their Mt Kenya East counterparts endorsed Kindiki as their leader and linked with the executive arm of government.
The Mt Kenya leaders have also agreed to meet regularly to take stock of the progress and to review achievements and necessary interventions on critical issues that will be of concern to the people they represent.
"We shall further form a coordinating committee to serve as the linkage between us and the executive in the advancement of people-sensitive legislative and development agenda in our region and our region’s interests."
The MPs said their efforts to consolidate development have been frustrated previously due to the lack of a focal point of reference around whom interests and priorities of the people could be channelled to the Government for actualization.
"The Mt. Kenya Region has suffered high octane politics around fathom unity to support individual and personal ambition rather than the articulation, pursuit and lobbying of the interests of our constituents.
"Our attempts to call the region to the orderly prioritization of the developmental needs of the people have been frustrated by condescending threats of dire political consequences unless we support certain personal interests and ambitions. Yet time is of the essence given that we are already under three years to the end of the first term of this Administration."
They further reaffirmed their commitment to the unity and development of all the people of the Mt. Kenya Region and those in the diaspora.
"We are convinced beyond doubt that the unity of this region must be pursued in the context of the unity of the nation as a whole. We are one indivisible people of Kenya and must always put our country first-Kenya Kwanza."
Some of the leaders present include Mwangi Kiunjuri (Laikipia East), Eric Wamumbi (Mathira), Kimani Ichung’wah (Kikuyu), John Wanjiku (Kiambaa), Betty Maina (Murang’a), John Kiarie (Dagoretti South), Karen Nyamu (Nominated Senator) and Alice Ng’ang’a (Thika Town), among others.
