The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Narok on November 28, 2025, convicted and sentenced three people for offences related to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) performed on a minor.

The grandfather of the minor and owner of the premises where the mutilation took place, was convicted of aiding the offence.

He was fined KSh 200,000 or two years’ imprisonment in default.The sentences were handed down today after the prosecution, led by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), proved the case without any doubt.

The other two were found guilty on two counts under the Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation Act, 2011.

On the first count of failing to report the commission of FGM, each was fined KSh 200,000 or two years’ imprisonment in default.

On the second count of aiding and abetting the performance of FGM they received the same penalty: KSh 200,000 fine or two years’ imprisonment.

The court also fined each of them KSh 15,000 for failing to protect a child from harmful cultural practices, an offence under Section 14 of the Children Act.

The ODPP announced the convictions on its official X account this morning, stating that the ruling reinforces the fight against FGM in Narok and across Kenya.

FGM has been illegal in Kenya since 2011 under the Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation Act.

Narok County remains one of the regions with the highest prevalence rates in the country, according to data from the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey.

The case is part of an increased number of FGM prosecutions recorded by the ODPP in 2025.

All three convicts are required to pay the fines immediately or begin serving the default prison terms.
