One person was reported dead and several injured after a lorry and a 14-seater matatu collided near the Zambezi area on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway on Tuesday. 

According to the police at the scene of the accident, the cause of the accident is yet to be determined. Nonetheless, the injured passengers were transferred to various hospitals in the area. 

Images circulating online showed the front part of the matatu completely deformed while the lorry remained stationary on the road.

Tow services were promptly dispatched to the scene while marshalls embarked on clearing the road.

A traffic snarl-up disrupted traffic flow in the stretch following the accident, which resulted in drivers overlapping to navigate the situation. 

In a similar occurrence along the same highway a week ago, eight people lost their lives while several others were injured after a van collided with a stationary truck at the Ngata bridge.

In the devastating accident were seven family members who were travelling to Kisii for an event. The seven were laid to rest on Tuesday, April 16 in a sorrowful function. 

A multi-agency team inspecting vehicles along the Nairobi Nakuru Highway on Tuesday, April 16 at Uplands netted scores of vehicles that were declared unroadworthy.

The crackdown comes at a time when the authorities have come under fire over the high number of road accidents recorded recently.

Led by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Regional Manager Kendi Mutua, the authority urged drivers to obey traffic rules and avoid reckless driving. 

"What I have noted mainly is the driver's behaviour. Most of them are a bit reckless and we have an issue with tampering of speed governors," Kendi noted.

A report by the NTSA indicated that 7,198 Kenyans have been involved in road accidents during the first quarter of 2024, marking an increase of 1,908 compared to last year.
