Tanzanian music superstar Ali Kiba has finally broken his silence regarding the vintage-inspired coat that went viral after appearing in his latest music video.
The garment, widely described as resembling a traditional "granny coat," caused a stir among fans and fashion observers.
Speaking about the controversial choice, the veteran musician confirmed he was entirely surprised by the garment.

The Coat That Sparked Millennial Memories
The garment in question is a vintage-inspired designer cardigan sweater. Ali Kiba wore it during his latest music video collaboration, dubbed Focus.
The appearance instantly captured attention. For many millennials, the classic designer sweater brought back fond memories. It resembled styles once commonly favoured by their grandmothers during family gatherings.
Ali Kiba’s choice to wear the piece highlights the cyclical nature of fashion. It also positions him as a trendsetter by blending old and new styles. By reimagining the vintage sweater, he has bridged generational gaps.
On Set Surprise
Ali Kiba admitted he did not know the item was a ‘nyanya’ (granny) sweater. He recounted the moment his designer presented the item while on the set.

He detailed his outfit, explaining that he was dressed in a white shirt and yellow trousers. Since Tanzania is hot, he was holding the sweater.
The star initially thought the designer had finished dressing him. He had completed his makeup and was ready to enter the set.
He explained that the sweater was only brought to him after he was already sitting down and preparing for the filming.
"Mimi mwenyewe nilikuwa surprise kwa nini yule designer alileta ile sweeta hata sikujua kama ni ya nyanya."
The Designer’s Plan
Ali Kiba revealed his initial reaction was to challenge his designer. He wanted to ask, "What is this thing you are bringing me?".
However, the designer offered a specific explanation for the choice.

The designer stated that the item represented the specific 'code' or look he wanted. The designer also noted that he did not want the artist to wear the item because he would sweat.

Ali Kiba reflected positively on the incident, even praising his stylist. He believes the designer "played a very good part" in his work.
"I think he played very good part katika kazi yake ya kudesign na nini ya kunistyle."
The singer confirmed that the now-famous 'granny sweater' will not be seen again. He reiterated that the situation "just happened," and he was unaware of its vintage significance when it occurred.
