Busia: Audacity Of Hope, Girl Shows Up To School Without Shoes, Fees Seeking Admission

As Form One students settle into life in secondary, one girl who failed to raise school fees took the bold step to go to a school and seek admission, lack of money notwithstanding.

The administration of Ng’iya Girls’ High School admitted the determined Form One student who reported with only 11 exercise books and a pen.

Freza Anyango Odhiambo who sat her KCPE examinations at St. Teresa’s Girls’ primary school in Busia county and managed to score 376 marks did not carry along any personal effects.

She arrived at the school without shoes while in company of her mother who had only managed to borrow a small amount of money to buy her the exercise books and pen.

Principal Hellen Juma confirmed that the student and her mother arrived at the school in the morning without any of the listed requirements, adding that they did not have any money to pay for admission.

"We were left with no choice but to admit the student even though she had none of the requirements since she comes from a poor background," she said.
Freza’s mother Winnie Onyango who does menial jobs in Busia says that after getting the calling letter for Ng’iya Girls’ High School, she made various applications to banking institutions and organizations that offer scholarships in vain.

She said that she resorted to bringing the girl for admission without the requirements because she feared that she was going to lose the chance.

Juma stated that it is the school's hope that the girl will get support from well-wishers to be able to continue with her secondary education.
