More People Feared Dead After Another Devastating Landslide
Elgeyo Marakwet County has been hit by another landslide just a day after a devastating mudslide at Marakwet East constituency, Chesongoch, that claimed dozens of lives.
The latest incident occurred at Kibendo in Keiyo North following heavy overnight rains, prompting an immediate response from the county disaster team, the office of the area MP, and ambulances already on site.
Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich took to his official Facebook page at midnight on Monday, November 3, 2025, to confirm the latest landslide in Kibendo, Keiyo North.
He urged residents living in fragile areas along the escarpment to move to higher ground.
“We have just experienced another landslide at Kibendo due to the torrential rains. The county disaster response team, office of the Area MP, and ambulances are already on site,” the governor said.

Rotich also pleaded with residents on unstable slopes to act immediately, warning of the ongoing danger: “I urge all residents of Elgeyo Marakwet County who live on unstable slopes to move to safer grounds. I beg each one of us to listen. These are extraordinary times, and everyone must comply to save lives.”
The latest landslide comes just a day after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen led rescue operations in Chesongoch, Marakwet East, where authorities recovered 26 bodies.
Twenty-five people remain missing, while 26 survivors are receiving treatment in the hospital following the earlier disaster.
Rescue teams face challenges, as some victims may be buried deeply in the mud, complicating retrieval efforts.
The most affected areas include Edow Village, which lost 19 residents, Embobut with five fatalities, and Sambirir, where two people perished.
Murkomen attributed the devastating Elgeyo Marakwet landslides to years of unchecked deforestation and unsustainable farming practices, describing the tragedy as a national catastrophe and warning that more lives could be lost if residents fail to heed government safety advisories amid the ongoing heavy rains.
