Bamburi Cement Plc, a subsidiary of the Pan-African Amsons Group, has expanded its manufacturing presence in the Coast region with the launch of a Sh100 million Ready-Mix (RMX) concrete plant in Mombasa County.

The facility, operated by Bamburi Special Products (BSP), is strategically located in the Bamburi area and boasts a production capacity of 120 cubic meters per hour.

It includes a fleet of transit mixers, mobile and fixed concrete pumps, and a mobile testing lab.

The plant is set to support the growing demand for high-quality concrete solutions in Mombasa Island and surrounding areas.

Amsons Group Cement Cluster CEO Mokate George Ramafoko said the launch responds to rising demand driven by ongoing infrastructure and housing developments in the region.

“The Coastal region is home to major infrastructure projects such as the Mombasa-Malindi Highway, Dongo Kundu Bypass, Lamu-Garissa Highway, and the Lamu Port. These projects require reliable and high-quality concrete solutions, and our new plant is well positioned to meet this need,” said Ramafoko during the commissioning.

He added that the new facility would help curb the use of substandard concrete mixes, which have contributed to structural failures in the construction industry.

The new RMX plant will supply innovative concrete grades, including self-compacting, waterproof, and high-strength concrete.

Additionally, it will offer special chloride-resistant concrete suited for marine environments, using Bamburi’s purpose-designed Duracem and Duraplus cement brands.

“Concrete made from Ordinary Portland Cement (CEM I) lacks resistance to seawater chlorides, which penetrate concrete and corrode reinforcement steel,” said Bamburi Cement Commercial Director Martin Kariuki.

“Our plant will deliver concrete that withstands such conditions, helping enhance the durability of coastal structures.”

The investment is part of Bamburi’s broader strategy to diversify its domestic market reach following its acquisition by Amsons Group.

Bamburi currently operates Ready-Mix plants in Nairobi and precast facilities in both Nairobi and Mombasa.

Looking ahead, the company plans to deepen its investment in the Coast with the development of a Sh51 billion Integrated Clinker Plant in Matuga, Kwale County.

The project is part of Amsons Group’s Sh51 billion ($400 million) commitment to expand its operations in Kenya over the next three years.

Kenya’s construction industry is forecast to grow at over 5 percent annually between 2025 and 2028, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, making the sector a vital contributor to national GDP.
