Uhuru allies face MPs in vetting for Cabinet positions today

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula is set to lead a panel of MPs today for the vetting of President William Ruto’s Cabinet nominees.
Among them, Mutahi Kagwe, nominated to head the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, stands out for his notable achievements during his tenure as Health CS in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.
Kagwe gained national prominence during the Covid-19 pandemic, where his meticulous communication and leadership were pivotal in managing the crisis.
His ability to convey complex health information clearly and effectively earned him public trust and admiration, turning him into a household name.
Under his stewardship, the Ministry of Health implemented strategies that not only aimed to contain the virus but also to ensure continuity of essential health services.
As he prepares for the vetting, scheduled to start at noon, Kagwe is expected to articulate his vision for transforming the agriculture sector, particularly in enhancing profitability for farmers.
This is a critical agenda, considering the pressing economic challenges faced by the agricultural community.
His previous experience in handling crisis communications may serve him well as he navigates questions regarding agricultural reforms, especially in the tea, coffee and dairy sectors—key industries Ruto aims to revitalise.
Kagwe’s nomination comes when the Mt Kenya region is experiencing heightened political tensions, following the impeachment of then Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The region’s political dynamics are shifting and Ruto’s choice to nominate Kagwe, alongside other prominent figures, is viewed as an attempt to quell unrest and reinforce his support.
Other nominees include former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo to Information, Communications and Digital Economy docket and Lee Kinyanjui to the Investments, Trade and Industry ministry.
Kabogo’s background in governance and his understanding of local connectivity issues are expected to be focal points during his vetting.
As the vetting committee proceeds with its hearings, the focus will be on how each nominee plans to address pressing needs.
Kagwe will likely face scrutiny for his strategies in boosting agricultural productivity and ensuring farmers benefit from favourable policies.
His plans could include reforms to improve the efficiency of agricultural supply chains, incentivise production and enhance market access for farmers.
The public has been invited to submit memoranda regarding the nominees, but as of press time, it was unclear whether any had been received.
This lack of public feedback may reflect on the region’s cautious optimism, as several MPs, including allies of Gachagua, have expressed support for the nominees.
Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia emphasised the importance of ensuring the new appointees bring tangible improvements.
