President William Ruto has intimated that Kenyans currently occupying land that the government seeks to use to set up homes under the Affordable Housing Programme will be well catered for.
Speaking on Sunday during a church service in Bahati, Nairobi County, Ruto allayed fears of eviction noting that citizens on the targeted land will be given money to rent a space elsewhere as they await for the construction to end.
"There will be no eviction, every Kenyan will be given somewhere to live as they wait for the houses to be built, that is our job. We will give you money for two years you rent a place then when we finish the house you occupy your house," said Ruto.
While asserting that his government is committed to providing affordable homes to Kenyans living below the breadline, Ruto said that the plan to build housing units is expected to kick off on a high note by the end of 2024.
"Our plan is that by the end of this year, we will have 50,000 homes built in Nairobi alone. In Makarara before the end of the year we will have started the construction of a minimum of 30,000 houses," added Ruto.
"In the next five years we should have 1 million homeowners in Kenya so that we begin to dignify the living conditions of Kenyans."
State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed has in the past stated that the government is seeking to create a new generation of homeowners under the programme by constructing 250,000 houses every year for low-income earners.
This comes as the Housing Bill, which was termed unconstitutional by the courts for lacking a legal framework and has been met by a tiff contention from Kenyans, became law after Ruto's assent.
Kenyans, both salaried and unsalaried, will be expected to pay 1.5% to the Housing Levy from their monthly salaries.
