Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) Chairperson nominee Issack Hassan has disclosed his net worth to be Ksh.100 million during a vetting session in Parliament on Friday.
Appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Administration and Internal Security, Hassan explained that he owned rental apartments, vehicles, own house and several businesses.
He added that he estimated the figure and did not conduct a comprehensive valuation of his assets.
"I have an apartment in Kileleshwa, vehicles and buildings in Garissa. The total amount is around Ksh.100 million. I'm giving estimates because I did not do any valuation," he said.
During the session, Hassan noted that upon approval, his new role would involve engaging the public to restore confidence within the police service.
This is after the police service was criticised for using brute force during the Gen Z protests that occurred in mid-2024.
"We need to have robust engagement with the public. It's very hard to draw a line but where officers use excessive force, it's very clear," he noted.
Further, his previous role as Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson between 2011 and 2016 came back to haunt him as the lawmakers questioned how he would steer IPOA to success.
"Working in Somalia has shown me what a civil war can do to a country. Everything is destroyed and there's no rule of law," he responded.
"In 2007 we also went to the brink of civil war, we should never again, and how do we do that, by respecting the rule of law."
President William Ruto nominated Hassan as IPOA chair, outwitting eight candidates who were shortlisted for the role.
