Netizens Blast Wema Sepetu For Congratulating President Suluhu

Tanzanian actress Wema Sepetu has come under heavy criticism after posting a congratulatory message to President Samia Suluhu.

The post, which many saw as ill-timed, was shared on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at a moment when the country is mourning the loss of citizens who reportedly died during recent demonstrations.

Wema shared a message on social media expressing admiration and prayers for the President. She wrote, “Number Moja wetu… Allah akubarik na akupe nguvu na ujasiri… ALLAH HUMMA AMEEN YARAB. Mama Yangu Mama… Mama Samia Mama.”

Her post immediately drew mixed reactions online, with several public figures and social media users expressing disappointment over her message.

Among those who commented on the matter was Kenyan actress Jacky Vike, who posted a strong response. “Smh… HE WHO ALLOWS OPPRESSION SHARES THE CRIME!!!” she wrote.

Jacky went on to share her condolences with those affected, saying, “My condolences to the families that lost their loved ones. Poleni sana, may all the heroes who died fighting for Tanzania rest in peace.” Her post was widely shared as she expressed solidarity with Tanzanians mourning the victims.

Another public figure who spoke out was radio host Alex Mwakideu, who reminded Wema to be mindful of her followers and the nation’s mood.

“Jamani Wema, hivi umesahau kwamba uko na ufuasi wako mkubwa tu unaoomboleza kwa sasa?” he asked, noting that Wema’s message could appear insensitive during such a difficult time.

Wema, one of Tanzania’s most recognised actresses and a former Miss Tanzania, has not yet issued a follow-up statement addressing the backlash.

However, her choice of words in the post, particularly her calling President Samia “Mama Yangu Mama,” has been interpreted by some as strong personal support for the Head of State despite ongoing tensions in the country.

The reactions highlight how closely public figures’ words are scrutinised, especially during moments of national crisis. Many have urged Wema to show empathy and awareness of the pain many citizens are experiencing.

For now, her message continues to attract attention as Tanzanians debate whether it was an expression of loyalty or a show of poor timing in a period of mourning.
