The Nairobi Women's Hospital College has launched an internal investigation into the actions of one of its students - Vanessa Ogema following a viral clip that captured her verbally abusing a medical staff at Port Victoria Hospital in Busia County.
In the clip circling across social media, Vanessa was seen harassing the nurse on duty while issuing threats using Youth Affairs, Arts and Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba's name.
In a press statement on January 4, 2024, the college termed Vanessa's actions regrettable and confirmed she is among the students enrolled in the Theatre Technology program and awaiting graduation.
"It has come to our attention that Vanessa Ogema, a student enrolled in the Theatre Technology program and awaiting graduation, was reported to have caused disruption and harassed medical staff at a hospital in Busia County.
"We strongly condemn the regrettable actions displayed by Vanessa. These actions do not align with our values and standards at NWHC. As an organisation, we are committed to nurturing compassionate and responsible professionals," part of the statement read.
Adding:
"To address the matter, we have initiated an internal investigation to gather all relevant information and will institute appropriate measures in line with our institution's policies and procedures," NWHC noted.
This follows another statement by the National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNA-Kenya) condemning the incident, terming it as extreme and uncalled for.
"The National Nurses Association of Kenya condemns in the strongest terms possible the unfortunate attack of a nurse at Port Victoria Hospital in Busia County while in her line of duty. The provocative savage attack to a nurse allegedly by a relative of a politician was heinous, extreme and uncalled for in totality," NNA said.
