Uhuru Park is fully operational after its recent temporary closure at the height of anti-government protests in the capital, the Nairobi County government has said.
The public park was temporarily closed due to vandalism during citywide protests in June; however, it has been in operation since September 28, according to Maureen Njeri, the County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Green Nairobi.
“The park was closed temporarily for safety reasons after incidents of vandalism during the protests. We had to ensure that all damages were fully repaired, especially to key features like the caravan and aeroplane sculptures,” Njeri said while addressing concerns surrounding the closure.
Park officials say the park has attracted over 2,000 visitors over the past two weekends.
“Uhuru Park is a vital part of Nairobi’s heritage, and we’re happy to see Nairobians returning to enjoy its beauty,” said Njeri. “We’ve restored the monuments, cleaned the ponds, and ensured that everything is in top shape for visitors.”
While the park is free to access, visitors are required to present identification upon entry.
Meanwhile, renovations at the nearby Central Park are still underway.
Njeri said the park is expected to be completed by December 2024, and like Uhuru Park, be handed over to the Nairobi City County once the work is finished.
